Wedding Reception - The Fluttering Wall

Event Design, Planning & Executing

Year: 2017

Transforming the garden for a special bride

SITUATION

When my sister got married, it was inevitably my job to make her wedding a roaring success! (For those of you with siblings, you know how easy this can be :)

A designer, with event planning experience and generally “a get things done” kind of person I was given the mandate to design her invitations (on another page) & spatial experience of the wedding ceremony that transformed for the night .

PROJECT SCOPE

2 months. Challenges included efficient layout, flow of guests, adapting space within one hour and minimal change of décor within a tight budget.

APPROACH

This project was then broken into 2 parts:

1. The spatial layout, flow and lighting were done in collaboration with another design studio – ALAVI designs. https://www.facebook.com/AlaviDesigns/

2. Creative planning and management was done by Designs by Farwah team.

OUTCOME

A fluid wall that created a barrier between a hidden bar and the main stage, served as grand backdrop and drastically adapted with lighting effects. We used cheap easily availble materials innovatively to create a 20 feet(length) by 1 ft (breath) x12 feet (heightt) lightweight installation. This was complimented by a dramatic stage floor, matching invitation theme, to be revealed at night. Took advantage of the garden look and used Ikebana style floral arrangements to soften the look further.

SPACE AND FLOW

ALAVI designs provided a general layout. We then worked together to utlise budget efficiently and ensure backend supply, guest flow and layout were coordinated.

LOOK BOARD

After gathering input from bride we put together a look board to ensure the overall look matched the garden, airy and elegant look.

SETUP AND IN USE

Alavi Designs and we setup over the course of a day and half. Ensuring all the details like flowers (arrangements by Sabera Tufail), candles lights, entrance etc were thought of.

PROCESS IN DEPTH

PROTOTYPING THE WALL

Idea approved, Designs by Farwah had to figure out how this installation/backdrop could be made. How would it hold up in the wind and how many pieces it would require to build it out?

We first started with trying the smallest unit of 3 feet width, 3 rows in and 6 feet length.

PRODUCTION LINE

Once the prototype was confirmed, we then set about creating 54 full length hangings. Using jigs and tools to replicate for mass handmade production.
